Orienteering Basics Class

November 5

In anticipation of a few Eastern students trying out orienteering for the first time this coming Saturday, we're holding a mid-week introductory class in the EWU rec center. Thank you to EPIC Adventures for letting us use their nice facility, and open up our class to the community.

This class will be an introduction to orienteering and how to participate in an event. We'll cover some elements of map-reading, especially the peculiarities of orienteering maps, and we'll answer questions. This will be a good place to start if you've never done an orienteering event before. If you're already comfortable with the very basics, you might be interested in the next class we'll have at Eastern in two weeks. See the listing below.

This class is open to the public, but it's not a huge facility so we'd appreciate knowing that you plan to attend. Please take a few seconds to let me know you're coming. We'll only use your email if the class gets over capacity or has to be cancelled for some reason. Thanks.

EWU Campus Sprint

November 8

Eastern Washington University's 300 acre campus is the venue for these urban sprints — and it's beautiful in the fall. Sprint orienteering uses a large-scale map with symbols appropriate to a more urban setting than our usual events in the forest. To be competitive you have to think fast and move fast.

  • Parking Lot 12, west of Roose Field
  • Start: Any time 10-11:00
  • Course closes: 1:00 PM

Orienteering Skills Class

Thanks again to EWU's EPIC Adventures for letting us use their space in the Rec Center and open it up to the community for free. Here's a chance to learn a few skills just ahead of our event at the Cheney Wetlands coming up in just a few days and a couple miles from here. In this class session we'll introduce some of the strategies competitive orienteers use to navigate more efficiently. The maps, photos, and short videos in the class will illustrate orienteering situations but the same concepts carry over to any outdoor recreation where you have to find your way or might get lost. We'll provide compasses to practice with, but bring your own if you want to.

This class is open to the public, but it's not a huge facility so we'd appreciate knowing that you plan to attend. Please take a few seconds to let me know you're coming. We'll only use your email if the class gets over capacity or has to be cancelled for some reason. Thanks.

Cheney Wetlands

South, once again, for another exploration of the Cheney Wetlands. The map has a little of everything that makes our region a great place to orienteer — interesting topography, a variety of vegetation, and lots of beautiful scenery. John Beck is designing courses that will explore different areas than the last time we were here.

We'll meet and park at the trailhead to the Columbia Plateau Rails-to-Trails, so you'll need a Washington Discover Pass.

Our annual meeting will follow this event. See below.

Following the pick-up of our event at the Wetlands, we'll meet nearby at Barrelhouse Pizza to discuss the next orienteering season and elect officers. It's your club — come have a slice and give us your input.

From the trailhead parking lot, head back to Cheney. At the light go right. In one block go left and you'll see it.

  • Barrelhouse Pizza
  • 122 College Ave
  • Following the Cheney Wetlands event (about 3:15)
